History of Philadelphia Theatre

THE RITZ 5 THEATER

214 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106

The Ritz 5 Theater

This historical theater opened in 1976. It was founded by Ramon L. Posel. At the time of its debut, it was known as the "Ritz 3 Theater" due to its three auditoriums each consisting of 450 seats. The theater later closed down in 1985 but soon resurrected as the "Ritz 5 Theater," a name concocted from the five auditoriums in the theater.

The theater is on Walnut Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is in an urban surrounding and thus has many frequent visitors such as city folk.

The indie theater screens popular films and even foreign films. It was devoted to bringing arthouse films to Philadelphia. Currently at the time I am writing this entry, it is screening Academy-nominated films such as Beasts of the Southern Wild, Lincoln, Amour, and Quartet.

In 1992, acclaimed director M. Night Shyamalan chose the theater to debut his feature-length film Praying With Anger.

Enjoy the show!

To this day, 30 years after its grand opening, the theater is still going strong and is part of a great line of Philadelphia's grand attractions.
